Budae Jjigae (Army Base Stew). It’s essentially a heaping bowl of America with ingredients like spam, hot dogs, baked beans, American cheese… It’s basically everything you get scavenging off American military bases thrown into a pot with Korean spices. It’s pretty fantastic, especially as a pantry-clearer.

Also spinach salad (Sigeumchi Namul) and cucumber salad (a take on Oi Muchim).

Back in the day, it was designed to be the most painful, drawn out method of execution that was reserved only for the worst of criminals, not to mention be a show and warning to anyone watching. (Incidentally, Jesus was swapped in for a mass murderer who was scheduled for that day.)

So this isn’t a religious reference. (I doubt Christianity exists in a world where Arceus and Mew do, anyways.) It’s Team Plasma being pretentious *ssholes, claiming that the Gym Leaders are horrible criminals for encouraging Pokémon training and battling.

I think you’re sort of neglecting that Team Plasma, at its core, is a cult. Its philosophies and rituals dip into religion as much (if not often more) than their animal rights angle. The characters not getting an ‘oh, Jesus’ moment is irrelevant, the reference is for the reader’s sake.

While, yes, crucifixion is an absolutely horrible way to die, there are a lot of those. Crucifixion, when it’s pulled out, is way more about who’s up there than who strung them up. In modern interpretation, it’s used to show a very moral figure (which the gym leaders would be) fallen at the hands of a corrupt person or power system. Like, I dunno… Jesus?

Being a religious reference works for everything this panel is putting forward, and even your explanation for why it’s not religious fits right into the mythos (the whole point of crucifying Jesus was to display him as a criminal for not following his persecutor’s world view, and kill him horribly for the audacity). Especially since the Japanese aren’t shy about delving into religious ideas and imagery, the cross and crucifixion being a particular favorite, I don’t see how you can deny a religious reference or think a lack of one makes the image stronger.

There are three likely candidates, actually, with Puerto Rico, DC, and Guam. But Puerto Rico loses its mind when it’s suggested, DC is constantly being shut down despite rampant enthusiasm, and as far as I’m aware Guam is still as ambivalent to the idea as the US itself. Maybe someday, but not soon.

After reading this a while back I thought Diamond equipped with a huge shield in an RPG AU was the most perfect thing ever… Then I happened to draw everyone else. Some are based off the same post and some are just random using up most of the role/class in a typical RPG. Also added some pointless weird descriptions to things just for fun. I really wish I could of been more creative on some of them. Hmm.. I forgot headgear on all them.. Ahh.. Haha ..

“Afternoon!” Alycia said brightly. “How are you guys enjoying retirement?”

“It’s been very relaxing,” Oliver said, and gave a hug when she came over for one. “It’s still amazing to wake up Monday morning and have nowhere to go. What about you, how’s the opening?”

“Hectic,” she admitted with a laugh. “But everyone seems to be enjoying the menu.” The smile got a bit wider when she was given a look. “Well, here’s the lunch and dinner menue. Feel free to order whatever you like.”

Jean took it up, critically. “Alright, thank you.”

“I’ll just give you guys some time.” She headed off to more agreeable patrons.

The new menus had a homey script printed on butcher paper. Each applicable entry had a beer neatly printed under it, which corresponded to a key on the liquor menu that listed breweries and awards.

It was clean and fitting, as he’d been taught. When he couldn’t find anything printed to point out, he ordered a meal so large and diverse that it made Oliver’s vegetarian penne look downright anorexic in comparison. Oliver quickly canceled his own, but insisted the beers be served in significantly less than the pints they would normally give. Alycia kept the smile she’d perfected over a decade of difficult customers, and hurried off to the kitchen.

“Are you honestly going to…”

“He deserves an honest review from us, doesn’t he?” Jean replied, coolly. “I won’t be as harsh as the critics, I guarantee you.”

Oliver’s brow raised in a sign of resignation. It wasn’t far from the truth, even if Jean was going to do his best to match what the papers could put out, and he waited for their table to be covered in appetizers. He continued to stay quiet as Jean tasted individual components, combined for balanced bites, and took sips of the correct beer at a pre-determined time. When he finished with one, he’d move onto the next.

And, as the staff looked on nervously, he eventually returned to the first and continued eating.

“So, how is it?” Oliver asked when he finally was allowed to dig into the appetizer he’d been eyeing.

“Hm,” Jean replied, and picked through that course as he would the ones that would follow.

Joel only wandered from the kitchen when business had begun to die down, but mostly after his parents had a chance to get through to dessert. Even then, he sat down with only a guise of ease.

“What’d you think of my travesty?” Joel asked, purposely in his best French.

Jean took a moment to wash down the cake he slowly made his way through. “I suppose it can be forgiven.” He worked a forkful off another plate. “This time.”
